Welcome to the Archive for October 2003! What you will find here may be old. It may scare you. It may even scare me! [Comments: 2] 2:53 AM - you've-got-to-start-somewhere

I really should post random thoughts here more often.

WCKN kicked off its first Clarkson hockey broadcast for the season. I have to admit I was a little upset as the whole thing began. We started down two cameras, with a crew that really didn't have much experience behind them. To make matters worse, while I was the trying to direct and do graphics, as well as make sure that everyone else was paying attention, I was the only person that knew enough to try to recalibrate our video feeds on the fly, meaning I had to split my attention about 5 ways at once. I'm not good at 5-way multitasking.

By the end of the first period I thought it was going to be a really long game. Fortunately, our chief engineer, AJ, was working non-stop to get everything in order up at the arena, and by the end of the second period our broadcast was really starting to look like we knew what we were doing from that end. I had tied up what lose ends I could at the station, and the crew there was starting to get the hang of their jobs (again or for the first time, depending).

I love Clarkson hockey season, and I'm going to really enjoy doing the games again. It looks to me like our crew this year is going to be able to put on a good show.

Now I just need to find a trainee for graphics. I graduate this year and I'm going to need to find someone to serve as a replacement for the next few years.

In case you were wondering, it was merely an exhibition game, but Clarkson beat the University of Toronto, 4-1.

My friends at WTSC (Clarkson's radio station) were happy enough with their own broadcasts of the games, but apparently they caught some complaints from Alumni when their Internet feed from a totally different station was unexpectedly switched to WTSC. I think it would have been nice for the Alumni Association to let WTSC know before switching feeds, and I think WTSC should definitely collect what they can as constructive feedback. They've got a chance to make the effort and really impress students and Alumni alike. It would be a shame to miss the opportunity.
