Welcome to the Archive for February 2005! What you will find here may be old. It may scare you. It may even scare me! More importantly, you might find links that no longer work, and *gasp* information that is no longer, or possibly never was, accurate in any way. Don't rely on this information to save your life!

[Comments: 6] 5:33 AM - central-time-saddens-me

My next rant will be about time zones, but this part isn't related to my rant:

I have to say that now that I live in Central Time, I feel even less in step with people online. My schedule is already late—I like to stay awake until 4 AM—and now my 4 AM is the east coast's 5 AM, and that means that relative to me, people are going to bed even earlier, leaving me nothing to do! I am formally requesting more night owls be born, to stay up until 3 or 4 AM (any US time zone) and keep me company! :)

Luckily for me, my good friend Kristen seems to be up and about preparing for work at just a little before I go to bed, so I periodically get to chat with her. I wish she was on the way to bed, and not on the way to work, but it's nice to know someone's around.... :)

So I've moved to Evanston, IL! After some consideration, rather than look for my own apartment, Karl and Ray and I decided it would actually work a lot better if I moved in with them. We split the rent for this place, and that saves me at least $300/month, plus I don't have to provide my own food, and pay for my own furniture and other services. So the process was started to add myself to their lease, and I now have a parking space and a bunch of keys to get me inside the building.

In accordance with this, it was agreed that since Ray has the larger room, I'd share with him. I had to get myself a bed, which I promptly did. The delivery was prompt as well, and after a trip to Bed, Bath, & Beyond for sheets, I have myself someplace to sleep that isn't a couch. So far, so good. :)

Down the line, Karl and Ray have been planning to move into Chicago, and we figured it might be good to look for a larger apartment down there, so we can all live in one place but still have our own bedrooms. This works better for work, since we can all just wander to the living room to be "on call," rather than having to trek to or from somewhere else. Being in Chicago puts us closer to the datacenter as well, which makes getting on site much easier.

As for working, the first couple steps included a stop at Equinix, our datacenter, to get myself an ID card and hand scanner access to both of our cages. (The cages house our large racks full of servers that we basically contract out for other people to use.) It's fairly neat to be able to gain access to a particular location by punching in a code and then placing your fingers on a hand scanner. :)

I'm still getting settled in here. I need to find myself a bank. I'm thinking it'll probably be Washington Mutual, because the rates and account offerings seem to be superior to the other nearby alternatives. I also need to find a nearby doctor to follow up on some prescriptions that I'm taking regularly. Hopefully those two items will be resolved in a couple weeks or less.

That about sums up the state of things now. If you want to call me, I recommend my cellphone, because that's just as good as anything else. If you want to send me things, just email me, IM me, call me, or ask my parents for my address.

Thanks to everyone that wished me well on my trip out to Illinois and beyond. :)
